Out and about in Munda

Munda is a coastal town, the largest on New Georgia Island in the Western Province of the Solomons with around 4000 inhabitants. It has a compact, central district known as Lambete, also referred to as ‘the station’ by locals. The Munda International Airport is just a few minute's walk from everything the town has to offer: a BSP bank, two ATMs, an Our Telekom branch, a post office, No. 1 Currency Exchange, a police station and the Munda fresh produce market; along with six Chinese-run general stores, a bakery, café & takeaway, two hardware stores and a fishing & dive gear shop. Oh yes, and a very popular ice-cream shop.
The restaurant at Agnes Gateway Hotel is situated on the water's edge and open everyday from 7am until late, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Helena Goldie Hospital is easily accessed by buses that regularly run between Munda and Noro. |

Munda Day MarketsFriday is Munda Day when islanders from the lagoon come to town to bring their produce to the market. There's a great selection and a vibrant atmosphere. The arrival of the weekly direct flight from Auckland and Brisbane at lunchtime adds to the festive feel. Roviana carvers and craft vendors are out in force, displaying their wares. Visitors with connecting flights and an hour or so to wait are able to take full advantage of this; the market is only a couple of minutes walk from the Munda International Airport down the main street.

MUNDA
It's a flat, easy walk to most places in Munda but if you're feeling the heat, mini-buses (with a B on the number plate) and taxis (with a T on the number plate) are available. You'll find these around the market area. Cars can be hired from Qua Roviana

MUNDA TO NORO
Noro is a port town 13km north of Munda. Mini-buses and taxis regularly travel between the two on a sealed road. Buses usually go via the hospital, the fare is SBD20. Taxis cost around SBD300 for a one-way trip (confirm the price before you set out).

MUNDA TO GIZO
There is no public boat transport from Munda. Ships call in at the port at Noro en route to Gizo, the capital of the Western Province: the Pelican, MV Marina and MV Fairlady. Banana boats leave for Gizo from the wharf in front of the Noro market, Monday to Saturday around 8.00am.

MUNDA TO MAROVO LAGOON
Solomon Airlines operates three flights a week from Munda Airport to Seghe and once a week to Ramata. Ships travel to Honiara through Noro to the Marovo Lagoon.
