Carvings and Crafts

The Marovo Lagoon is well-known for its fine carvings. Uepi Island has a weekly carver's market where visitors can view and buy pieces. Marovo Island Traders and Driftwood Lodge take a contemporary approach, incorporating traditional carving into modern furniture and design. Fossil coral lighting features are a speciality. Wherever you stay in the Marovo, your host will be able to direct you to the local craftsmen in their area. These carvings make wonderful mementos of your travels while bringing much-appreciated revenue into the community. Biche Village also has a centuries-old tradition of stone-bowl carving in basalt, demonstrated during their tours.

Culture: Biche VillageGATOKAE ISLAND
Biche Village on Gatokae Island’s remote south coast, is considered Marovo’s most culturally preserved village. The community provides excellent guided tours to historic tambu sites from the headhunting era including skull shrines and sacrificial alters. Custom stories are recounted and traditional stone-bowl carvings displayed for sale. For nature lovers the setting is scenic with a waterfall an easy ten-minute walk away. The famous tame eels can be found in the stream that runs through the village and turtles are plentiful in the sea close to shore. While access isn’t straight-forward, day trips can be arranged through Driftwood Lodge. A two-room guest house is available for longer stays. There is no network connection at the village itself, but txt messages are checked regularly from an area where there is a signal. |
